Original Post: How can I repair this table's stop?

I spilled a fragrance oil on my end table. I did not realize the fragrance oil spilled for at to the lowest degree a few hours. When I wiped information technology off, the stop became much lighter in colour. Besides, I think there may take been a polyurethane (not sure if oil or acrylic) top layer on the end table.
In the picture, you are looking at the surface area of discoloration. It is round in shape, perchance the size of a plum. (My phone does not have a flash, then y'all are also seeing the reflection of the lamp light that sits on top of the end tabular array.)
What can I do to go the top of the end table to take a consequent color? What can I exercise to go rid of the lightened discoloration expanse? Do I demand to find a matching stain?

If you are lucky, it was just the top coat that was damaged. Can you lot experience an edge to the damaged area with your fingernail?
Take a cotton wool swab, moisten it with denatured booze (rubbing alcohol will piece of work) and rub information technology on an area that won't show, and see if it softens or removes the superlative layer of finish. If information technology does, it is likely a shellac terminate.
Do that examination and let us know....

Distressing to say, but in my experience the but manner to go this to match well is to sand and refinish the entire table top. You may be able to get a fractional repair to look fairly expert, just you'll always see it.

Sdodder is right on the mark. The oil acted like a stripper and completely dissolved the finish, whatever it was. Almost all finishes darken in colour with age/sunlight, then no repair will arrive disappear or even look remotely the same. Information technology volition demand to be stripped and refinished.

Hi CarbideTipped, sdodder, and XSleeper - not the advice I wanted to hear, but I do appreciate the insight. There are some other irregularities on the meridian of this and another like end table. How hard is a stripping and sanding task? Whatever ways to make information technology easier?

If you just need to refinish the top, it isn't a large deal to sand it down. But take care to not get carried abroad sanding and sand through the veneer.

I would strip the summit and so that y'all just need to do a lite sanding.
